I was invited to speak about lightning conductors at a recent CIBSE, HVCA & ECA joint event in Newmarket recently.

I introduced the standard BSEN 62305:2006 'Protection against Lightning' one of the first questions raised was how did they know the persons they employed to do lightning protection was qualified.

That made it easy for me - to ensure competence of a lightning conductor engineer you should ask to see their CSCS Photo ID Smartcard and on the back it should clearly state Lightning Conductor Engineer - NVQ II or III, If it says anything else (Steeplejack, TV Aerial Erector, Rope Access Specialist, etc, etc) then stop them working until they or their company can demonstrate competence to your satisfaction.
